Rome airport transportation: how to get from Fiumicino to Rome
Fiumicino Airport or Leonardo da Vinci Airport (LDV / FCO), as it is officially called, is quite far from Rome city center.
However, it is well connected to it.
There are several ways to get from Fiumicino to Rome city centre and public transport options such as the bus and the train will bring you to Rome Termini, the city's main train station which is also a great transport hub with connections to almost anywhere in Rome (and the rest of Italy).
The main ways to get from the airport to the city are:
- Train: my personal favorite, offers a fast and reliable service, it takes about 35 minutes to get you into the city
- Bus: best budget option
- Taxi
- Private transfer
How to go from Fiumicino airport to Rome by train
There are two types of train connecting Fiumicino to Rome, both departing from the same station within the airport.
The direct, fast train from Fiumicino to Fiumicino to Rome Termini is called Leonardo Express.
Leonardo Express is a fast train with good seats and luggage storage facilities. There is only one class of travel and it offers comfortable seating, charging station and decent, yet not always perfect, wifi. It brings you to Rome Termini in 30-40 minutes.
The other train is a local train connecting Rome to Fara Sabina: it is slower but cheaper train, with stops at several Rome stations including Roma Ostiense, Roma Tuscolana, Roma Trastevere and Roma Tiburtina.
The local train can be a good option if you are not staying neat termini but rather close to one of the other stations in Rome: this is the only train with intermediate stops, while the Leonardo express is direct.
The Leonardo Express is the most used by tourist and the one I recommend to reach city centre. The other train is a good option if you know your accommodation is close to one of its stops.
If this is not the case, the Leonardo Express is the train for you.
Fiumicino airport has its own train station that is reachable from within the terminal.
As you walk out of the luggage hall and into the arrivals area, you find signs leading you up the escalator/lift and towards the station.
The station is on the opposite side of the road from the terminal and one floor up: the walk is all within the airport building, well indicated and no longer than a few minutes.
Once in the station you will see the two types of train.
They are easy to recognize from one another: as well as a board at the top of the platform with the info about the train, Leonardo Express trains also have their name printed on the side, making them very easy to spot.
The Leonardo express at present costs
- 14 Euro one way
- Kids under 4 go free
- Kids 4 to 12 years of age go free (one kid per paying adult only)
Tickets can be bought at the automatic machines or ticket tellers in the Fiumicino station.
At a slightly higher price point, you can also get it online in advance here (there is usually no need, unless you arrive very late and don't want to have to worry about it on arrival)
The train stops at platform 23/24 in Termini. From Termini, you can then walk, catch a taxi, take a bus or the metro to your accommodation.
The train to Fara Sabina is cheaper at at present costs:
- 8 Euro one way
- Kids under 4 go free
- Kids 4 to 12 years of age go free (one kid per paying adult only)
Tickets can be bought at the automatic machines or ticket tellers. You can find it exact stops here.
Very important note: in some cases, train tickets must be stamped to be valid.
When you buy tour train ticket, this may come in one of two forms:
- a ticket that is for a specific train and a specific time – with this one, you just board the train, no extra steps needed.
2. An open ticket with no date/time. This ticket needs to be validated before boarding or won't be considered valid.
You will find stamping machines at the platforms and you must make sure you use them.
On trains there are checks and they do no make exceptions: a non validated ticket will result in a fine (yes, even you could rightly argue that it wasn't clear or well explained that you had to stamp it).
Once in Ternini, you may get a taxi to your hotel or one of the local buses.

Getting from Fiumicino to Rome by taxi
Official taxis in Rome are white and easy to recognize.
They station just outside the airport terminal and you cannot miss them.
They operate on a fixed fare system and the cost currently is 50 Euro to go from the airport to 'inside the city walls' which means in Rome city center.
This system covers most tourist areas but if you are staying out of the centre or have any doubts about the fare, make sure you double check before boarding the taxi.
A sign with current fare is on the walls at the taxi rank and again into each taxi – refer to it in case there is any issues (in fairness, you probably won't, legit taxis are ok).
How to find a legit taxi in Rome Fiumicino: need to know
Official taxis are white, with a 'taxi' sign on them and they lign up immediately outside Fiumicino arrivals hall.
They are easy to recogniser and they operate with a meter, even if the fare is, as said above, set for the city center.
This description of the taxi system in Fiumicino might make you think all is straight forward and it kind of is, except for a couple of things to remember.
The line to get taxis in Fiumicino is not orderly and if you are used to very organised situations, you may think is it pure chaos.
It kind of is but stick with it: just go to the curb and you will be in a taxi before you know.
The other thing you need to know is that while you walk towards the taxi rank, you will be most likely approached by several people offering 'taxi? all legal!'
Now, the thing you need to know about these services is that they are not standard taxis but private providers and, there and then, you will not be able to gauge if/how reliable and legit they are.
If you prefer to get a private transfer service, I highly recommend you book it in advance (see below) so you can pick a company you trust.
Using a taxi from the airport into Rome with kid: car seat rules
Important note if you are going from Fiumicino to Rome city centre by taxi with a child: taxis in Rome do not carry child seats.
They are not compulsory in taxis but if you do want to use one (which I highly recommend) you need to bring your own.
If you book a private or shared transfer, do ask what they provide for children and make sure you are happy with what they offer.
Welcome Pickups (transfer service company) does offer them: just make sure you mention at the time of booking and they can source the right one for you.

How to get from Fiumicino Airport to Rome city center by private transfer
There are several situations in which a private transfer may be preferable to a standard taxi service.
The main one is when you are traveling with more than 4 people or with a lot of luggage.
Taxis in Rome come in different sizes. A you get to the top of the taxi rank line, you will be directed to a car of suitable size for your group, however, this may take time.
If a large car is not available, you may have to wait until one comes, if it does. Also, taxis for over 4 5 people are rare and it may result in you having to take two different cars.
To avoid this, you can book a private transfer: this will ensure you will have the most suitable vehicle for you are your bags too.
Several offer this service, offering different types of vehicles and prices.
Some examples are:
Welcome Pickups – this is a large company that specialises in transport services in many parts of the world. You can get a free quote online on their website. This is the only company I personally received recommendations for and that I have booked myself for an upcoming trip.
Other companies are avaiable on GetYourGuide, which is a handy place to compare prices of different options:
Fiumicino to Rome City center shared transfer (mini van)
Fiumicino Airport to Rome private transfer
Fiumicino Airport to Rome Luxury Transfer
